Fuji TrainingFukushima TrainingOkinawa TrainingFukui Training At WISH, in addition to the SI Program offered in the dormitory, on-site training programs (3-4 day training camp) are offered in local communities, in which students can strengthen their understanding on diverse themes such as local business, local culture/society, regional development/revitalization, and earthquake disaster reconstruction. A partial list of previously held programs is introduced here.*Examples of past training locations“Climbing Mt. Fuji and considering the issues concerning Mt. Fuji” The primary objective of this two-day training program is to climb Mt. Fuji, a mountain that represents Japan, and strengthen the understanding regarding environmental conservation issues related to Mt. Fuji, industry of the surrounding area, and Mt. Fuji as an object of worship. Through this training, students learned about Mt. Fuji’s topography, history, related industries, and existing issues, and acquired an in-depth understanding about Mt. Fuji. Climbing Mt. Fuji was physically challenging; however, students obtained a unique sense of accomplishment by climbing it with classmates, and experienced the unforgettable view from the summit.“Considering Fukushima’s ‘Present’ and ‘Future’ over Ten Years after the Earthquake Disaster” This program includes a firsthand account of the recovery from the earthquake disaster and nuclear accident, from those who continue the battle toward recovery, and helps to strengthen the understanding of the current situation in Fukushima. The significant part of the program is visiting the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Students visited the areas damaged by the great earthquake, surveyed the damage and confirmed the range of measures and initiatives toward recovery. In particular, with “rumors” and “fading with time” as the key word, they acquired an accurate understanding of the current situation and learned the importance of ensuring that people do not forget it.“To consider the issues (challenges of the U.S. military base) from the perspective of the people living in the area” Considering how to resolve the “relocation of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma issue” from the perspective of local residents, students visited the site to observe the challenges of the U.S. military base, while listening to local residents, local government officials, and professors and students from Okinawa International University. Students learned in-depth about the local conflict and the deep-rooted historical circumstances regarding the issue, which they had only known as a news headline in their daily lives. The issue cannot be easily resolved, however, the students persevered in their analysis of the cause of the issue through discussions with students from Okinawa International University, and presented the best possible solutions to the local people. Students furthered their understanding of the importance of being attentive to stakeholders’ perspectives within the conflict and way of thinking, and of the importance of university studies to broaden their perspectives and understand different issues within society.Exploring the Future of Regional Cities This program offers a fieldwork experience in Fukui Prefecture, which is renowned for its high levels of happiness. Through this program, participants learn about regional revitalization and local development. In particular, the program focuses on Katsuyama City and Echizen City. Participants engage in traditional craft experiences, interact with local residents, and listen to presentations from local experts. By approaching the challenges faced by this regional city from a micro perspective, participants explore ways to enhance the vitality of Fukui Prefecture. With the recent extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen line generating much interest, participants work together with local students to develop ideas for regional revitalization.12On-site Training SI Program: The Reward of Learning is Learning
