Life in a student dormitory is community life and it is different from life in your own home. Please understand your lifestyle would be different if you entered a student dormitory. Students from all corners of Japan and the world live and study together. (For example: Waseda International Student House (WISH))In principle, four (or three or two in some cases) people form one unit and share a living room. The residents may hear the natural noise of others, as the rooms are fitted with vent holes for natural ventilation, and this is a communal living space. For that reason, unit sessions are held regularly, where all unit residents participate and discuss rules within the unit, regarding matters such as noise level. However, please remember that living in WISH is different from living in an apartment or a condominium mansion: you are likely to hear living noise. Can I apply for another dormitory at the same time? Please read “Application for Multiple Dormitories” at the bottom of page 5. If I am not accepted through document screening, can I reapply during another application period? No, you can apply only once during the designated period. How does the screening work? On the Online Request Form, you will write an essay, for instance giving your reason(s) for applying for your preferred dormitory. The essays and other information provided on the Online Request Form are considered comprehensively in the screening. How are the results announced? The Screening results will be e-mailed to the applicants. Inquires about the results and the screening will not be accepted. How do you determine unit mates for Waseda International Student House (WISH) ? The Student Affairs Section determine roommate and unit mates. The dormitories encourage interaction with a wide range of people, and they usually put students of different nationalities, grades and schools together. Can I visit the dormitory to have a look? Currently the dormitories are not open to visits since people are living there. You can see some scenes of the dormitories in the “View Housing Video” posted on the Dormitory Desk, Student Affairs Section Website. WISH may hold an Open House tours in August. Please check our website for more information. Can I visit the dormitories to have a look? You can visit whenever you want, but please call our office before you visit. Can I choose my contract period? Yes, you can. Longer contracts are more economical. There is no restriction on extensions for undergraduate and graduate students as long as they are enrolled at Waseda University. It is also possible to transfer to another dormitory within the contract period. I am planning to enter the School of International Liberal Studies. Is it possible for me to conclude a 1.5 year contract? Only students in the School of International Liberal Studies, which includes the overseas study program starting in the summer of second year for all students, may conclude a 1.5-year contract with Waseda University International Dormitories (WID). 1.5 years is considered a full term and deposits will be returned at contract end. Only half of the management fee will be charged for the second year. How are the residents selected? For WID and Dormy, there will be no screening but the drawing of lots after the application is closed to allocate applicants to the dormitories. What if there are no vacancies in my preferred dormitory? Don’t worry; as long as you apply, there will be a room for you at one of our WID facilities or Dormies. In addition to the Dormies introduced in this booklet, we have over 100 buildings, mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area. What do I need to bring with me? The guidebook included in the entrance packet will inform you of the items that should be brought. The day for move-in and for bringing luggage will be designated by the Student Affairs Section. You cannot bring guns (including toy guns, model guns), bows, wooden swords, or any other weapons into the dormitory. As the rules vary by dormitory, please refer to the entrance document sent to successful applicants. Can I use Internet in the dorm? Waseda International Student House (WISH):Internet access is available through wireless LAN connected to Waseda University’s network, subject to the network policy of Waseda University. For example, there may be restrictions on transmissible protocols. As this is a best-effort delivery service (i.e. a service in which the network does not guarantee the baud rate or the service quality) shared in the dormitory, the resident may experience some difficulty in with connection depending location and time.Higashi-Fushimi Student Dormitory: Internet access is available. It says that I need to bring my own bed linen. Is there a lease service? You may either bring in your own or lease it. More information is provided in the entrance document sent to you. How can I find a residence after the expiration of my contract period? You will need to look for a residence by yourself. However, we provide support in the form of information about private apartments and dormitories operated by affiliated companies. Can I move to another dormitory? After you have moved in, it is possible to relocate if a vacancy comes open in the originally preferred dormitory, or at the end of the academic year. (For example, a student might move from WID Hanakoganei 2 to WID Waseda.) To make moving economical for you, when you relocate, we will transfer your security deposit, contract period, and yearly maintenance fees (when moving mid-year), so you won’t have to pay initial fees.*There may be a price difference if you move to another dormitory. Aren’t commuter trains hard on students? For students boarding in Tokyo, it’s normal to commute about 30 to 60 minutes. The WID facilities and Dormies are located along train lines that make it easy to commute to each campus, so day to day life is easy. Is it possible for me to cook for myself? Yes, you may cook in the kitchen corner. In some dormitories, some rooms have cooking facilities. Residents cook or eat out depending on their lifestyle.
